Before heading into this weekend Community Shield battle, both teams have been involved in other matches. Let’s check out the latest results that they have been getting to have an idea about their current form.
Recent form in all competition (last five matches): LLDLW
Liverpool hasn’t been doing too well in their preseason losing three out of their last five friendlies. However, The Reds did win their latest preseason encounter, defeating Lyon 3-1 just before heading into this weekend match.
Jurgen Klopp’s side won’t be to concern with their unconvincing friendlies, as they believe they can step it up once the real thing starts. However, with some important players arriving late in their preseason, Klopp will need to do some rotation.

Man City have been doing better in their preparation winning four and losing one out of their last five friendlies. Their latest match was a trip to Japan in which they beat local side, Yokohama Marinos 3-1.
Despite getting better results, Pep Guardiola’s side won’t get overconfident as they know it will be a tough match on Sunday. The Spaniard will hope that his players can continue to get their shape well and pick up a good result.
Klopp still won’t be able to field his best possible squad, with Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah lacking fitness. Those three might not start for the Sunday clash giving Oxlade-Chamberlain, Origi and Lallana opportunities to show their qualities.
The Reds should have a solid defensive setup though, with only goalkeeper Alisson in doubt to start the match. Liverpool will try to play their regular fast past pressing football, even without a full lineup.
City also has a similar situation with some top names such as Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus, Ederson and Riyad Mahrez returning much later in the preseason. This means that Guardiola set to start the match without a real center forward upfront.
Raheem Sterling could lead the line alongside Bernardo Silva and also Leroy Sane. New signing, Rodri, is also set to play from the start as Fernandinho is not fit yet.
Head to Head Records:
In their last five meetings, The Reds have gotten the better of City with three wins, one draw and one defeat.
However, Man City won their latest matchup on January 2019 with a 2-1 scoreline.
Both teams are eager to show their strength and beat their rival early in the new season. Man City will be looking to show that they are a worthy league winner by taking down Liverpool.
However, The Reds won’t go down easily as they’re ready to battle hard for 90 minutes or more. It’s going to be a tight match, but Man City could edge it having the better available talent for Sunday.
Final Score: 3-1
